About the course Seminar goal: To learn about and practice new techniques and coping strategies for working with anxiety in this client group. Summary: In the morning we will share knowledge about anxiety in this client group, and learn about the compassionate approach to anxiety which views it as ‘an ally to be listened to’ rather than ‘an enemy to be fixed’. In the afternoon we will identify and practice new techniques and coping strategies for working with anxious clients, including compassionate self-talk, mindfulness, and body-focused tools. The day will begin and end with compassionate attention to our own anxiety. Proposed schedule: 10.00 Welcome and house-keeping; Introductions; Contracting and confidentiality 10.15 Mindfulness exercise: identifying with own anxiety and sharing with self 10.30 Small group discussion: Why am I doing this session? Large group feedback: identifying and sharing learning goals 10.45 Session one: Mapping the terrain – what does anxiety look like in your client group? [Kids 9-10, Young People 11-17, Young Adults 18-25, Parents/Carers] 11.30 Coffee 11.45 Session two: Introducing the compassionate approach (anxiety as ally not enemy). Understanding and validating why teens are anxious 12.45 Plenary 1.00 Lunch 1.45 Session three – techniques and strategies to add to your tool kit To include: compassionate self-talk, mindfulness and body-focused methods Skills practice 3.15 Tea 3.30 Plenary – checking in with our learning goals, plus a word about medication 4.15 Mindfulness exercise: The Inner Smile 4.30 End About the facilitator Briony is a counsellor, but also offers training and supervision. She has trained counsellors at Willows Counselling Service in Swindon where she remains a consultant trainer, and at the University of East London. Overall Purpose/Aim of Training:

  • To prepare already qualified counsellors to work therapeutically with children and young people.
  • To adhere to the BACP Humanistic Competences framework for counselling Children and Young People.

Entry Requirements

  • Counselling qualification at diploma level or above
  • You must be a registered member of an appropriate professional body, i.e. BACP
  • If you do a placement with TIC+;
    i.Two References (one must be from your counselling employer or clinical supervisor)
    ii.Enhanced children young people and vulnerable adult DBS check. This can be arranged for a fee of £55 if not already in place.

The course will run over 7 months on the following dates:

• Seminar 1: 12/13 September 2020
• Seminar 2: 17/18 October 2020
• Seminar 3: 28/29 November 2020
• Seminar 4: 9/10 January 2021
• Seminar 5: 20/21 February 2021
• Seminar 6: 20/21 March 2021
